Rigid Box vs Mono Carton vs Corrugated: Choosing the Right Packaging for Your Product
Rigid boxes, mono cartons and corrugated boxes are three different packaging formats, with different materials and different uses. This guide explains what each is, what it is made of and when to use it, so you can match the format to your product.
What is a rigid box, and what is it used for?
A rigid box is made from greyboard wrapped in paper, kraft, specialty paper or cloth. It holds its shape rather than folding flat. Rigid boxes are used for premium gifting, jewellery, cosmetics, corporate gifting, luxury products, retail brands and promotional programmes.
Common styles are lid-and-base, magnetic, book-style, drawer, and hinged or collar. Inserts can be die-cut board, foam, moulded pulp or fabric-lined. Construction, dimensions, wrap and inserts are customised to the product. Rigid boxes are made in-house at our Gurugram facility. See rigid boxes.
What is a mono carton, and what is it used for?
A mono carton is a folding carton made from duplex grey-back or white-back board, SBS, art card or kraft. Cartons are die cut, creased, folded and glued in-house. Mono cartons are used by FMCG, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food, consumer goods, industrial and retail brands.
Styles include straight tuck, reverse tuck, auto-lock and crash-lock, and window patching is available. Board weight and dimensions vary by requirement and are confirmed at quotation. See mono cartons.
What is a corrugated box, and what is it used for?
A corrugated box is made from corrugated board, which has a fluted layer between flat liners. Manufacturers, exporters, e-commerce businesses, FMCG businesses, industrial customers and retailers use them. Corrugated packaging is customised by size, strength, ply or flute requirement, printing and intended application, and is confirmed per job. Corrugated boxes are produced in-house. See corrugated boxes.
When should I choose a rigid box?
- The packaging is part of the presentation of a premium or gift product.
- The box is a corporate gift or retail display piece.
- You need custom inserts to hold and present the product.
When should I choose a mono carton?
- The product needs printed retail packaging.
- You need branding and product information printed on the pack.
- The packaging should fold flat before it is filled.
When should I choose a corrugated box?
- The product needs protective packaging for shipping, handling or storage.
- You are exporting, selling through e-commerce or supplying retailers with outer packaging.
- The product already has its own primary pack and the corrugated box is the outer layer.
Can I combine more than one packaging format?
Yes. Many products use more than one layer, for example a rigid box for presentation inside a corrugated outer carton, or mono cartons grouped in a corrugated shipper. Mono cartons, corrugated boxes, rigid boxes and paper carry bags are all made in-house, so more than one packaging format can come from one supplier. Kraft cartons and mailer boxes are also available. See the packaging range. We serve Delhi NCR directly and can dispatch suitable orders across India.
What about finishing and branding?
Rigid boxes can be wrapped in printed paper, kraft, specialty paper or cloth. Mono cartons are printed on the board, with window patching available. Finishing for each format is confirmed per job. We offer foil stamping and embossing on suitable products and materials. Feasibility depends on the substrate, design, quantity and product construction, so we confirm the finishing method against the actual job.
How do I brief a printer for packaging?
- Product: what the packaging will hold, with size and weight.
- Format: rigid box, mono carton or corrugated box.
- Dimensions: internal or external.
- Quantity.
- Material: board or wrap. If you are not sure, describe the intended use and we can suggest options.
- Style: for example lid-and-base, tuck or auto-lock. A reference sample or sketch helps.
- Printing: what needs to be printed.
- Finishing and any window patching.
- Inserts: whether the product needs a die-cut, foam, moulded-pulp or fabric-lined insert.
- Artwork: PDF, AI, CDR or high-resolution JPG/PNG. A print-ready PDF with bleed and crop marks is ideal. If your artwork is not print-ready, we will tell you what needs fixing.
- Delivery date and location.
If you have ordered the same packaging before, mention the previous order reference.
Can I see a sample first?
Samples can be provided for many products. For some jobs we can show existing production samples; where a custom sample or prototype is required, the process, cost and timeline depend on the product and specification, and any charge and expected timeline are confirmed before the sample is produced. If you have an existing physical sample, send or show it to us along with the quantity and any changes you want.
Frequently asked questions
Which format should I choose?
It depends on what the packaging has to do: presentation (rigid box), printed retail pack (mono carton) or protective shipping (corrugated box). Tell us the product, quantity and use, and we can suggest practical options.
Can I order all three formats from one supplier?
Yes. Rigid boxes, mono cartons, corrugated boxes and paper carry bags are all made in-house, so more than one packaging format can come from one supplier.
What's the minimum order for custom packaging?
Minimum quantities depend on size, board, printing and production method. Send the specification and quantity and we will confirm whether the job is commercially workable.
Can I reorder the same packaging later?
Where the previous specification, approved artwork and production information are available, repeat orders can be produced against the existing job details. Mention the previous order or job reference when you reorder, and we will flag any change in material or production condition before production.
Can packaging be delivered to multiple locations?
Yes, multi-location dispatch can be arranged for suitable orders. Send the number of destinations, quantities per location and delivery details so logistics and charges can be included in the quotation.
